Mentor Municipal Court Judge John Trebets graduated from Lake Catholic High School. He attended Cleveland State University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Judge Trebets received his Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
Judge Trebets established his law practice in the law firm of Klammer & Trebets. The Judge served over two years as assistant Lake County Public Defender and was the Assistant Law Director and Police Prosecutor for the city of Eastlake. He has dealt with all aspects of Municipal Law prior to his election as Mentor Municipal Court Judge.
The Judge has always been very active in the community and is a past member on the board of the Lake County Council on Aging. He is a past president of the Mentor Rotary. The Judge is a past President of the Northeast Ohio Municipal Judges Association and is a member of many local and statewide non-profit groups and committees.
Judge Trebets believes in Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake and their citizens and strives to improve the quality of life for all. Since taking the bench he has created several new community service programs implemented through the Probation Department. As an alternative to traditional sentencing the Judge will offer community service as an option when appropriate. This is a benefit because it saves the taxpayers money. He has also been able to assist the Mentor Library, Mentor Police Department, Mentor Fire Department and Mentor-on-the-Lake Service Department.
Judge Trebets established Lake County’s Mental Health Court and Drug Court. He willingly accepted the challenge of leading the effort to reform the way the county has traditionally handled the mentally ill and drug addicts who break the law. These are offenders who would probably never have been incarcerated except for behaviors resulting from their illness or addiction. Judge Trebets understands this premise and is dedicated to ensuring the success of these courts.
Judge Trebets and his wife have three children, three dogs, and are proud to call Mentor their home.
